Dr. George Jones, a leading instructor with Sleep Group Solutions, discusses Oral Appliance Therapy for the CPAP Intolerant patient. The original article, published in the latest edition of the Sleep Magazine, takes a patient from screening to treatment. “A 77 year old female patient was referred for Oral Appliance therapy by her Physician. Her medical history was significant for hypertension, GERD, hypothyroidism, glucose intolerance, and severe obstructive sleep apnea with daytime somnolence.” says Dr. Jones on his newly referred, OSA diagnosed patient. “Her dental history was significant for macroglossia and a retrognathic mandible with a class II jaw relationship.”
Dr. Jones began with an exam, followed by further testing using the Pharyngometer, and Rhinometer. “We can manipulate the mandible and see its effect on the airway caliper in real time with the Eccovision by SGS.” Dr. Jones then found the most optimal mandible position. “A Whole You Respire Herbst appliance was chosen for its ability for fine protrusive adjustments and lateral mobility.” A home sleep test was then administered for further results.
