Diabetes is a Serious Problem in Indiana, According to the American Diabetes Association
According to the American Diabetes Association, diabetes is a serious problem, particularly in Indiana. More than 750,000 children and adults in Indiana suffer from all forms of diabetes, including type1, type 2 and gestational. Type 2 diabetes is the most common type of diabetes found in Obstructive Sleep Apnea patients. Dental Sleep Medicine education company, Sleep Group Solutions offers continuing education lectures on the topic, to teach dentists how to screen and treat for snoring and sleep apnea, and discuss risk factors involved. Indianapolis lecture is on November 21/22 at the Hilton Garden Inn, with Dr. George Jones as the speaker.
It would be a difficult task to find someone who does not personally know an individual with diabetes. Hoosiers are increasingly feeling the effects of this disease. Approximately 1 in 4 of those who have diabetes does not know it. And at least 1.9 million Hoosiers are living with pre-diabetes, putting them at risk for type 2 diabetes in the future. "We know that diabetics have much more difficulty with regulation of fat and weight gain–possibly related to the concentrations of leptin released from their adipocytes (fat cells)," says Dr. George Jones a General Dentist and Dental Sleep Medicine expert in Sunset Beach, NC.
During Dr. Jonse’s two day lecture he will lead the class through a proven turnkey protocol which dentists are implementing to provide treatment and screening options for patients. The protocol includes scientific data, medical collaborations, home sleep testing, instrumentation, insurance and billing, oral appliances, and marketing. “The protocol we discuss during the lecture is proven, and it works. We have been following it for years, with much success.”
Today, it is estimated that 1 in 3 children born after the year 2000 in the U.S. will develop diabetes. It is important to have heightened awareness of symptoms and signs of OSA in a diabetic patient population, as well in your general patient population. The OSA connection includes many risk factors such as; stroke, heart attack, GERD, Fibromyalgia, high blood pressure and hypertension.
