The Australasian Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine (AustADSM) Provides Mini-Residency Programs for Post Graduates in the Dental Treatment of Snoring and Sleep Apnea

The Australasian Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine (AustADSM) launched a three-day sleep seminar titled, 'An exploration of Dental Sleep Medicine and the role of the GDP' in Sydney, Australia. Dr. Derek Mahony, AustADSM founder and Specialist Orthodontist, lectures around the world on the topic, and created a mini-residency program consisting of four course modules throughout 2013. Dental Sleep Medicine Education Company, Sleep Group Solutions, supports the AustADMS and founder Dr. Derek Mahony, in  providing leading-edge education for Australian Dentists treating snoring and sleep apnea. The final module completes on November 15-16 in Alexandria, NSW, Australia.

According to Dr. Mahony, Australia is lagging behind in relevant treatment and screening protocols related to Dental Sleep Medicine. “It is clear that in Australia, we are lagging behind the Americans and most of Europe, in this field. To help encourage more effective treatments, we propose that an Association of all interested parties should be organized so that we can educate and support ourselves.” says Dr. Mahony on launching the association. The AustADSM intends to help educate practitioner Dentists through clinical meetings, and webinars, that keep leading-edge ideas accessible, and establish and maintain an appropriate treatment protocol.

American based Dental Sleep Medicine company, Sleep Group Solutions, is familiar with Dr. Mahony’s initiative, and have also helped pave the way for many successful Dental Sleep Medicine Dentists. “We think it’s exceptional that Dr. Mahony has created such a high standard of education and training in Australia and Asia. Implementing a proper protocol is essential for case success, and Dr. Mahony is up to date on the latest technologies and techniques.” says Rani Ben-David, President of Sleep Group Solutions.

“The options for treatment of OSA vary. The gold standard treatment is continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP), but this treatment has several drawbacks and long term compliance is poor.” says Dr. Mahony, who utilizes Oral Appliance Therapy, an effective method of treatment for patients in need of a CPAP alternative. Dr. Mahony incorporates the use of technology to map out the patients airway to locate any obstructions. “The acoustic reflection technique is reproducible, noninvasive, and free from potential side effects. The good correlation between AI and pharyngeal area adds to the potential of acoustic pharyngometry. Careful study of the pharyngeal cross-sectional area and curve topography may give a good idea about the site of upper airway obstruction.” says Dr. Derek Mahony on the use of Pharyngometry.

The dentist has a role in the treatment of OSA, and by regularly updating medical histories, and actively screening, dentists across the globe are saving lives by treating patients for Sleep Disordered Breathing.
