The California Department of Public Health Lists Heart Disease and Stroke, as Leading Causes of Death in the State

The California Department of Public Health Lists heart disease and stroke, as the leading causes of death in the state of California. In 2010, heart disease attributed to 25 percent of adult deaths, and stroke attributed to 6 percent of deaths in the state.  Making heart disease the number one killer, while stroke remains the number three killer in the state (American Heart & Stroke Association).  Dental Sleep Medicine education company, Sleep Group Solutions offers continuing education lectures on the topic, to teach dentists how to screen and treat for snoring and sleep apnea, and discuss risk factors involved, such as heart disease and stroke.  The Los Angeles lecture will be on November 15-16th at the Hilton Los Angeles Airport, dentists and hygienists are encourage to attend.

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is often found in patients with obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease, and there is growing evidence that sleep apnea is independently associated with increased cardiovascular morbidity, including heart disease and stroke.  Dentists around the world are being trained on how to treat these patients, and commonly using oral devices, which keep the airway open, to allow oxygen in.  Dental Sleep Medicine expert, and SGS instructor, experiences  first hand the serious risk factors involved with untreated OSA. “"In my practice, the presence of heart disease, and even worse, history of stroke is an immediate referral to a sleep physician. In 100% of those patients, they have tested positive for moderate to severe sleep apnea!”.  says Arizona Dentist, Dr. Stacey Layman who treats patients for sleep apnea.  Dr. Layman will be instructing the Los Angeles course on November 15-16th. “It is essential for dentists to be involved in the screening of patients for sleep apnea. The most common signs and symptoms are found in the oral cavity!"

According to a study connecting Sleep-related Breathing Disorders and

Cardiovascular Disease,   sleep-related breathing disorders are a group of conditions that range from simple snoring with sleep disruption, to the increased upper airway resistance syndrome, to sleep apnea. The study mentions sleep apnea may be associated with substantial cardiovascular morbidity and mortality, and early recognition and treatment may be effective in reducing these complications.

It is important to have heightened awareness of symptoms and prevalence of OSA in patients with cardiovascular disease, as well in your general patient population.  The OSA connection includes many risk factors such as; stroke, heart attack, GERD, Fibromyalgia, high blood pressure and hypertension.  Dentists and hygienists interested in attending the Los Angeles seminar, can find more information here.
