The 5th District American Legion Teams Up With Dental Sleep Medicine Company SGS and Former NFL Legends to Tackle Sleep Apnea

DALLAS, TX-The fifth district of the American Legion and Commander Jeffrey Perkins are teaming up to spread sleep apnea awareness, during an upcoming event.  The event is part of the national campaign, “Tackle Sleep Apnea.” “We are very excited to have the American Legion involved in this event,” President of the Pro-Players Health Alliance (PPHA), David Gergen said.  “The legion joined us in Tacoma and the event was the most successful to date.  I feel we will have the same amount of success for this event.”

The event will take place at the North Texas Automotive Museum on Nov. 1, at 7p.m.  The event is free to the public.  The museum is located at 677 W. Campbell Rd.  As part of the event Former NFL Legends, Erik Dickerson, Isiah Robertson, Dave Krieg, Derek Kennard and Roy Green will speak on their need to spread awareness, in efforts to save lives.  “I want to spread awareness about how serious sleep apnea can be,” Krieg said.  “

This event is the fifth stop, for the campaign.  The goal of the campaign is to successfully tackle every region. As part of the event, a discussion will be held with Dr. Harry L. Sugg, D.D.S., on the symptoms, health dangers and how dentists are now part of the treatment plan, for those who suffer from this potentially deadly condition.

There are currently a select number of dentists who offer oral appliance therapy (OAT) in efforts to treat those who suffer from moderate to severe sleep apnea.  In addition dentists can treat patients’ that are also resistant to the Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) Mask.  Dentists offer OAT through the creation of a custom made mouth piece.  “The mouth piece is like a retainer and works by pushing the jaw back in order to open up the airways, so that you can breathe,” Krieg said.

The upcoming event currently has 125 members from the Fifth District of the American Legion that will be in attendance.  In addition, Gergen will be meeting with the district during in upcoming meeting in efforts to spread awareness to those who will not be able to attend the upcoming event.  “I am excited that we are able to take part in such a great event,” Perkins said.  “This event will not only help members of the fifth district, but can help those in the Dallas community that feel that they could be at risk for having sleep apnea or are resistant to the CPAP mask.”
