The Skinny on Obesity in Illinois

The OSA and Obesity connection is discussed in the Sleep Group Solutions Sleep Seminar, with Dr. Anjoo Ely in Chicago, IL on May 20-21, 2016.

(Chicago, IL) According to recent statistics by Governing The States and Localities, Chicago residents are 34.3 percent overweight, and 27 percent obese.  Numerous studies linking obesity to OSA are evident, and Chicago residents also report 24 percent of zero physical activity in their daily routines.  Dentists have an opportunity to learn live with Dr. Anjoo Ely in Chicago on May 20-21, 2016 at the Doubletree in Rosemont.

Dentists are commonly the first line of defense in identifying possible sleep apnea patients, and Sleep Group Solutions teaches dentists how to implement a sleep apnea protocol.  Chicago area dentists and hygienists are encouraged to attend the Dental Sleep Medicine Lecture.  “Obesity has reached epidemic proportions and has long been considered a dominating factor in as many as 50 percent of OSA patients.”  says Dr. Anjoo Ely, instructor for Sleep Group Solutions, and dentist at Novi Oaks Dental in Novi, MI.

During the SGS two-day lecture in Chicago, Dr. Ely will discuss a bilateral association with obesity and sleep disordered breathing. Neck circumference, which is a surrogate marker for obesity, is also predictive of OSA:  >17” neck for males and > 16” neck for females.  “We know that the multiple arousals associated with OSA interrupt the endocrine system in such a way that many hormones associated with obesity, appetite, and metabolism are affected.” Dr. Ely discussed this association, as well as other indicating factors.

With an evident bilateral association between obesity and sleep disordered breathing, screening patients who are obese or have high blood pressure, diabetes, or who snore, are of utmost importance.  “Weight loss is also recommended as a treatment option for the management of OSA, but with limited success.”  says Dr. Anjoo Ely. Depending on the severity of the OSA, many cases can be effectively treated with an oral device, which keeps the airway open during sleep, allowing for airflow and oxygen.
