90 Million Americans Will Be Snoring This Valentines Day

Over three-quarters of the American population suffer from sleep related problems, mainly snoring. For the partner who doesn’t snore, lack of sleep is just as dangerous on your health as it is on your relationship. Sleep Group Solutions, a leading airway management company focusing in dental continuing education, teaches dentists how to screen and treat sleep apnea and snoring.

This Valentine’s Day, couples across the US will be indulging in chocolates, wines and rich dinners not regularly consumed. Come bedtime, the combination of alcohol and the compounds in chocolate have stimulating effects. Snoring is a common sign that you or your partner might have OSA, Obstructive Sleep Apnea. Dentists, such as Dr. Michael Hnat, a Pittsburgh dentist for over 30 years, is part of a tight knit group of dentists trained in the treatment of sleep apnea. Dr. Hnat has treated many patients with sleep apnea through oral appliance therapy, thus halting their apnea, and snoring. “Although research indicates that chronic snoring alone is linked to heart disease and the development of OSA, the impact that it has on a bed partner is reason enough to seek treatment. A simple oral appliance can keep married couples sleeping together in the same room as well as leaving ‘both’ feeling as if they had a quality night of sleep.” Dr. Hnat added, “Just this week I inserted a Respire sleep appliance on a female patient who told me she was getting it for her husband for Valentine’s Day!”

Sleep apnea disrupts the sleep of both the diagnosed and their partner, causing both to be sleepy and irritable during the daytime. A study published by Kelly Baron, PhD in 2009 found that disagreements and conflict in the marriage decreased for both husbands and wives after sleep apnea was treated. A good nights rest is in fact critical in a healthy relationship.

For Dentists interested in learning how they can treat sleep apnea, Dr. Michael Hnat will be lecturing in Ft. Lauderdale, Fl on February 10-11th. More details here.
